San Blas Islands, also known as Guna Yala, are a mesmerizing archipelago nestled along the northeastern coast of Panama in the Caribbean Sea. This autonomous indigenous territory is home to the Guna people, who have preserved their culture, traditions, and natural surroundings for centuries.
The islands, numbering around 365 (one for each day of the year as per local lore), boast pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Each island is a tropical paradise, often no larger than a few acres, adorned with swaying coconut palms and surrounded by shallow, warm waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.
Reaching the San Blas Islands involves navigating through a combination of land and sea travel from Panama City.
From Panama City to Puerto de Carti:
- By Car: The journey begins with picking you up from your hotel on a shared SUV transportation to the coastal town of Carti or Puerto de Carti. This drive takes approximately 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
- Road Conditions: The road from Panama City to Carti is mostly paved, but some sections may be rough or under construction, especially during the rainy season.
Transfer to the Islands:
- Boat Transfer: Once in Puerto de Carti, you'll board a shared fast-speed tarped boat (lanchas) to transfer to various islands within the archipelago.
- Travel Time: The boat journey from Carti to the nearest islands takes around 30 minutes to reach.
Pick up time in Panama City Center between 5:00-5:30 am
